About "Green Starts with Her"
OVAC proudly initiated a transformative program dubbed “Green Starts with Her,” in April 2023. This initiative is specifically designed to engage and empower young female students in environmental education and sustainable action. Through a multifaceted approach involving knowledge-building, mentorship, hands-on participation, and rewarding achievements, our program aims to cultivate a generation of environmentally conscious and empowered young women. By instilling a deep sense of environmental responsibility, “Green Starts with Her” envisions a greener, healthier, and more sustainable future led by these emerging leaders.
Objectives of "Green Starts With Her"
Our overarching goal is to nurture a generation of environmentally conscious and empowered young women who can actively contribute to a greener, healthier, and more sustainable future.
1. Environmental Awareness: Our foremost goal is to raise environmental awareness among young women. By providing them with a comprehensive understanding of environmental issues, we aim to equip them with the knowledge to make informed decisions about their environment.
2. Empowerment: We aspire to empower young women to become environmental advocates and changemakers. Through mentorship and active participation, we seek to boost their confidence and competence in addressing environmental challenges.
3. Sustainability Advocacy: “Green Starts with Her” aims to create a generation of sustainability advocates. We want these young women to actively champion sustainable practices, influencing their communities and fostering a culture of environmental responsibility.
4. Hands-On Engagement: Practical involvement is central to our program. By engaging students in activities such as tree planting, we aim to deepen their connection to the environment and provide them with tangible experiences of conservation.
5. Critical Thinking: We aspire to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills among participants. Through quick fire question competitions and debates, we encourage them to think analytically and communicate effectively about environmental issues.
6. Environmental Leadership: Ultimately, our program seeks to nurture environmental leadership among young women. We aim to inspire them to take active roles in environmental initiatives, advocacy, and policymaking, contributing to a greener and more sustainable world.
Program Model
This Program is designed to be delivered in the following means:
1. Knowledge and Understanding
OVAC recognizes the power of experiential learning. To enhance environmental education, we will employ case studies and mentor involvement. By immersing students in real-life environmental challenges and providing them with guidance from experts, we aim to enrich their understanding of environmental issues. These engaging sessions will utilize breakout rooms, allowing our team to lead in-depth discussions and case study exploration.
2. Mentor Involvement
Our program leverages the invaluable experience of mentors who are experts in their respective fields. Through discussions, debates, and knowledge-sharing sessions, students will gain deeper insights into environmental and climate change issues. This interactive mentorship will foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills vital for addressing these global challenges effectively.
3. Participation
OVAC firmly believes in the transformative power of hands-on involvement. To encourage immediate action, students will participate in the following activities:
a) Tree Planting: Following the knowledge and understanding sessions, OVAC aims to plant 400 trees alongside the three hundred young women in secondary schools. This practical activity will extend to creating and empowering a tree planting/environmental club, motivating young ladies to engage in tree planting within their school grounds and the wider community. OVAC will also introduce friendly interclass competitions to enhance engagement and enthusiasm.
b) Quick Fire Question Competition: To reinforce their understanding, OVAC will organize quick fire question competitions based on the case studies. These debates will be structured as interschool championships, promoting healthy competition and demonstrating students’ knowledge of environmental sustainability and climate change mitigation. This will foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills.
