About "Young and Green"
Welcome to “Young and Green,” OVAC’s innovative project that’s making a lasting impact on the future of our planet. Launched in February 2023, this program is specially tailored to primary and junior secondary school students in Kenya’s public schools.
OVAC takes pride in making environmental education engaging and relatable. We teach students about their everyday actions and how they can contribute to environmental conservation. From caring for young plants to understanding the global impact of climate change, we provide hands-on experiences that leave a lasting impression.
We’re on a mission to bring environmental education right into the classroom. Our “Young and Green” project is all about connecting the dots between science and the environment, sparking discussions about current environmental issues, and, most importantly, fostering a sense of personal responsibility among children for protecting our environment. We believe that by nurturing young minds, we’re sowing the seeds of a greener, more sustainable future.
Objectives of "Young and Green"
The “Young and Green” program aims to achieve the following objectives
Environmental Awareness: Our objective is to instill a sense of environmental awareness among primary school students. We aim to help them understand the importance of protecting our environment.
Personal Responsibility: We are working towards fostering a sense of personal responsibility in children for their actions and their impact on the environment.
Education Integration: Our goal is to bring environmental education into the classroom. We aim to connect scientific concepts to real-world environmental issues.
Global Climate Change Awareness: We are dedicated to educating students about the global impact of climate change. Our aim is to equip them with the knowledge needed to understand their role in climate action.
Critical Thinking: Through interactive sessions, discussions, and demonstrations, we strive to encourage critical thinking and problem-solving skills among students.
Creativity: Our objective is to promote creativity through essay writing. We aim to encourage students to reflect on the impact of their actions on the environment.
Participation: We are actively engaging students in meaningful conservation efforts, including tree planting and waste management. Our aim is to help them develop practical skills and a sense of environmental stewardship.
Program Model
This Program is designed to be delivered in the following means:
1. Knowledge and Understanding
In this phase, we provide students with valuable insights into global climate change impacts. Through engaging breakout sessions and demonstrations, we equip them with the knowledge to comprehend their role in climate action. We also encourage students to express their thoughts on environmental issues through essay writing, fostering creativity and reflection on their environmental impact.
2. Participation
We collaborate with key conservation stakeholders, such as waste management and tree plantation organizations, to enhance the project’s impact. Participation in conservation activities, including tree planting and waste management, not only connects students to meaningful work but also hones their problem-solving, collaboration, and leadership skills.
3. Educational Trips
OVAC partners with game parks, forests, and national parks to provide students with educational trips. An essay writing competition rewards outstanding students, who then become ambassadors of environmental awareness within their classes. This initiative not only increases environmental awareness but also promotes the significance of caring for our planet.
